Information About Andorra

Andorra

Andorra is a tiny country found nestling on the border between Spain and France and has a population of around 75,000 (UN Estimate 2007). The official name is the Principality of Andorra, or in Catalan, Principat d'Andorra. Andorra is divided into seven parishes: Andorra la Vella, Canillo, Encamp, Escaldes-Engordany, La Massana, Ordino and Sant Julià de Lòria. Arinsal is in the parish of La Massana.

There are three main resorts which attract tourists for mountain holidays in Andorra. These are Arinsal, Soldeu, and Pas de la Casa. Soldeu & Pas de la Casa are part of the Grandvalira area, and Arinsal is part of the Vallnord area.

Did you know that Andorra has the second highest life expectancy in the world? The clean mountain air and efficient healthcare system are sure to play an important part in this statistic.

Language

Catalan is the official language of Andorra, however Spanish and French are widely spoken, and English is usually understood. Andorra is the only country in the world where the official language is Catalan and they are very proud of the heritage and traditions.

Currency

The currency of Andorra is the Euro. Andorra has always accepted both the currency of France and Spain and until the Euro was introduced, both the French Franc and the Spanish Peseta were used. In 2014 Andorra officially joined the monetary union and now issues Andorran Euro coins.

Passports & Visas

You do not need a visa if you are travelling to Andorra from the UK or Ireland, however, you should make sure you have your passport with you and it is recommended that it is valid for at least six months after you travel. If you are coming you work in Andorra you will be required to apply for a work permit.

Customs

There are customs on entrances to Andorra from both Spain & France and all vehicles can be stopped and searched. As Andorra is not part of the EU, the amounts of certain goods allowed out are restricted.
